Sue Ryder centre gains £6.5k from Williamsons’ walk
(September, 2011)

Walking 1,140 miles between them, a group of more than 50 lawyers, friends and family from Williamsons Solicitors have raised £6,500 for an East Yorkshire charity.

For the second year, the Hull firm supported the Sue Ryder Holme Hall Care Centre in the Yorkshire Wolds Challenge charity walk.

The centre provides compassionate long-term residential and respite care for up to 37 adults with challenging conditions including multiple sclerosis, strokes, acquired brain injuries, Huntington’s disease and Parkinson's disease.

Deborah Rack, area fundraiser for Sue Ryder, said: “It was truly a supreme effort. The money Williamsons have raised could pay for the running of our minibus for fourteen months allowing our residents to go out on trips to places that many of us take for granted: swimming, the theatre or just to the local garden centre for a cup of tea, lunch or a change of scenery.”

Biorenewable future: Dr Jeremy Tomkinson of the national centre for biorenewable energy, fuels and materials

Conference to reveal biorenewables opportunities
(September, 2011)

The Humber region can build robust and sustainable supply chains as part of the developing biorenewables economy.

That’s the clear message outlined at the Biorenewables in the Humber conference on Thursday, October 20, organised by Humber Chemical Focus and hosted by Bishop Burton College.

The event is featuring eminent experts and leading industry players who will discuss opportunities in the biorenewables sector and outline its significance in meeting the government’s 2020 renewable energy targets.

Speakers at the one-day event include: Dr Jeremy Tomkinson, CEO of the NNFCC, the UK’s national centre for biorenewable energy, fuels and materials; Dr Graham Hillier, director of strategy and futures at the Centre for Process Innovation, Rich Hall, senior manager, sustainability, at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Afternoon workshops will be run by industry leaders Rob Wood, biomass buyer at Drax, and Robert Smith, commercial director at Vivergo; and there will be sessions by Dr Les Gornall of PROjEN BioEnergy, and Nick Cheffins of Peak Hill Associates.

A question, answer and debate session will be led by Julian Rush, former science and environment correspondent for Channel 4 News.

Dr Glyn Hughes, chief executive of Humber Chemical Focus, said: “We have a very big energy agenda, and in terms of biorenewables we have significant advantages such as our geographical position, raw materials and existing investment, particularly in waste to energy and biofuels. We are very well placed to become a leader in the sector.”

      Williamsons highly ranked
in 2011’s Legal 500
(September, 2011)

Williamsons Solicitors has achieved its best standing so far in the Legal 500, one of the country’s leading legal guides.

The Hull-based firm is ranked prominently in three key practice areas in the 2011 edition: family law, clinical negligence and crime, where it is picked out as the leading law firm in Hull and East Yorkshire.

Director Bill Waddington, who heads what is the region’s largest defence advocacy department, said: “This recognition from the Legal 500 is an important achievement for every one here at Williamsons Solicitors and gives an indication of how the firm is going from strength to strength.

“I would like to thank everyone in the firm for their hard work and dedication.”

Williamsons’ defence advocacy department employs a team of 21, including six solicitors, three police station representatives, two paralegals and 10 support staff. It regularly receives instructions relating to major criminal cases and also road traffic and regulatory defence work.

The firm’s clinical negligence department is also ranked as one of the leading firms in the region and is the only team based in Hull and the surrounding area with solicitors approved by Actions against Medical Accidents (AvMA) and the Law Society’s Clinical Negligence Accreditation Scheme.

Its family law department, led by director Sarah Clubley, was mentioned for how it successfully “deals with high-value family matters” and that it is “well known for its childcare work.”
